On commerce and social computing

Australia’s ITNews reports that Japanese consumer electronics company Sony is getting in on the social computing act with Vaio Nation. The site accepts video productions for uploading, commentary, and ratings. Not surprisingly, Sony is a big player in the camcorder market. Sony can use this new site to showcase Sony products like camcorders, laptops, cameras, music, and software editing tools.

As a Nikon user myself, I well remember the Nikon club membership days with a hard copy magazine and “special offers” for club members. Social computing offers a much more interactive, 21st century approach.

Expect to see more commercial applications of social computing in the future, like the Vaio Nation, as well as bounded membership sites where “club membership” is extolled as a social computing virtue.
