On the future

Today I received a magazine that I subscribe to dated December 2007, and it’s still October. The future is coming quickly enough without magazines taking a couple of months off my life!

On Facebook security loophole

There is a newspaper article today about a Facebook security loophole warning. Well, I read the article and it was all very lame, unless of course you don’t have any common sense.
The “loophole” is nothing more than opening your profile up (or having a friend in your personal network open up the profile) to the [...]

On Momento

I was at a friend’s place recently for dinner. We had a really wonderful dinner (thanks Joanna) and then out came the photos of their trip to Poland. Now I do like photography, but often the digital slide night can become a tad tedious.
However, I was pleasantly surprised to see a very nicely presented book with some [...]

On actKM Conference 2007

Yesterday I attended day two of the actKM conference in Canberra. The day was full of thoughtful speakers and enjoyable conversation. The venue was in an unpretentious room located in the lovely grounds of University House at the Australian National University.
David Gurteen opened the morning session with an overview of a range of social networking tools and technologies. David emphasised [...]

On e-learning and effectiveness

My regular dose of Australian Policy Online has alerted me to the 2007 e-learning benchmarking project.
“The 2007 surveys show use of technology in vocational education and training (VET) has quadrupled in three years since the first benchmarking survey in 2005. The 2005 survey revealed 6-8% of VET activity involved technology, which rose to 17% in 2006 [...]

On marketing and advertising

From time to time I like to look at what is happening in the marketing and advertising space with respect to the web and traditional advertising mediums.  Advertising and marketing are important communication channels. I have made some comments previously (you can use my Marketing category to find them if you’re interested). The key point has [...]

On information research

The latest issue of the e-journal, Information Research, is now available.
There are some really interesting papers, especially the paper by Marcia Bates on browsing behaviour and the paper by Judit Bar-Ilan on librarian blogs.
There are several book reviews too, including this one on David Weinberger’s book, Everything is miscellaneous (a book I am currently reading).
 All [...]

On blog action day

The 15th October was designated blog action day (yes, I know I’m a day late but, as I write, it’s still the 15th in the Galapogas Islands). Andy Roberts writes that the theme this year for blog action day is the environment and distributed collaborative action - “The important thing is that the mass action can become [...]

On David Gurteen

David Gurteen will be visiting Australia shortly to present at the actKM conference next week in Canberra (among other things). David will also be running his knowledge cafe at the NSW KM Forum meeting in Sydney on Thursday evening, 25th October.
Having met David previously (in England) and experienced his knowledge cafe last year with local representative Helen Paige, the coming [...]

On knowledge management - Dave Pollard

Every now and then I want to highlight a blog post that I have read that has really made me think. First up is Dave Pollard.
I first met Dave Pollard after a presentation he gave last year at the Online Information conference in London (Online Information is on again later this year). The presentation was a [...]

On tagging (3)

Chance encounters often reveal positive results. I came across this November 2006 blog post by Joshua Porter on why scale matters in tagging systems.
A point I want to tag onto (pun intended) is the one about the rights of the individual to tag anything with any tag the individual likes. Joshua illustrates with his comment [...]

On tagging (2)

I previously made some comments about tagging. I believe tagging has its place as does controlled vocabularies. John Udell’s blog post yesterday on tagging and foldering made the point that: “On the desktop as well as on the web, we’re in the midst of a long transition from container-based to query-based storage and retrieval”.
In container-based storage one [...]

On commenting in digital space (2)

Last week I raised the issue about a possible legal claim against the provider of an online discussion forum over comments made within that forum.
Today, the Australian Financial Review reports that in another case, an individual who posted discriminatory comments on an online chat group was liable under the Racial Discrimination Act but that the [...]

On education 2.0

Education is something we all take for granted in Western countries. It is fundamental to communication and knowledge and individual potential. However, is education as it is now practised in schools, training institutions, and businesses really the best way to operate in the 21st century?
Euan Semple just wrote this nice little comment quoting John Chambers of [...]
